The Society of Natural History, NHG

The Naturhistorische Gesellschaft, founded in 1801, is the greatest society for natural science in Germany whose members work on a voluntary basis and which is widely known not only in its centre area of Franconia, but far beyond the borders of Germany.

About 1600 members can work on a scientific basis in 11 departments, amateurs as well as experts. There are seminars, excursions, experimental scientific work, and ongoing publications in the following fields: archaeology, prehistory, botany, ethnology, geology, karst and speleology, mycology and herbalist studies, regional geography, entomology.

The Natural History Society also supports the Freiland-Aquarium and -Terrarium Stein (open-air terrarium and aquarium) in Stein near Nuremberg, ´Megilo´, the archaeological playground, the nature reserve ´Külsheimer Gipshügel´ near Bad Windsheim (owned by the society since 1905), the dolomitic cave Windloch near Großmeinfeld, the gypsum cave of Höllern near Markt Nordheim, the Celtic house Landersdorf, as well as archaeological projects in Germany and abroad.

In that way the Natural History Society offers its members a rich field of leisure activities. All departments offer information and knowledge in their special fields in lectures, excursions, seminars and publications. The cooperation with relevant institutes and scientists offers opportunities for all to gain first-hand expert knowledge.
